Technical Student - Intern/Student Job

Location: Eindhoven, The Netherlands
Type: Internship - Student job
Length: 6–12 months
Time: 20–40 hours/week
Start date: November 1st

Do you want to help shape the next generation of interactive wearables to enhance human performance?

Are you deeply interested in bio-sensing, human performance, and wearable technologies? Do you get excited about prototyping, testing, and applying engineering skills to real-world challenges in defense, sports, and healthcare? If yes, join us at Touchwaves!

Who We Are

At Touchwaves, we are developing pioneering tech solutions at the intersection of human physiology, haptics, and AI-driven data. Our mission is to bridge the gap between technology and human performance by creating intuitive systems that:

  • Enhance resilience and recovery.

  • Improve safety and operational focus.

  • Push the boundaries of human performance in extreme environments.

We collaborate with defense organizations, elite sports teams, and healthcare partners to validate and scale our technology.

Your Role

As an internship student at Touchwaves, you will play a central role in hands-on research, prototyping, and testing of our bio-monitoring and haptic systems. You will be responsible for preparing research hypotheses, designing experiments to test these hypotheses, and documenting your results. Depending on your technical background and interests, we have several internships available as single internship, or combinations of two research topics:

  • Research Topic 1: Tactile Communication Systems Research question: How can we design effective haptic wearables for purposeful communication? Hands-on activities: You will prototype vibrotactile interfaces, test different actuator types, integrate the electronics into textiles, create functional clothing prototypes, conduct user testing, and measure physiological responses to different haptic patterns.

  • Research Topic 2: Physiological Monitoring in Dynamic Environments Research question: How can we accurately capture and validate bio-signals in real-world conditions? Hands-on activities: You will set up experimental protocols, collect data using various sensors (SpO₂, HR, HRV), benchmark against medical-grade devices, analyze signal quality during movement similar to that in Touchwaves use-cases of extreme conditions, design custom sensing solutions for specific use cases, and document validation methods.

  • Research Topic 3: Actionable Insights from Physiological Data Research question: How can we transform complex bio-data into meaningful, real-time feedback for the tactile communication system? Hands-on activities: You will evaluate bio-monitoring sensor data quality, explore threshold parameters for real-time triggers, develop data processing algorithms, build visualization dashboards, create pattern identification models, design alert systems for critical thresholds, and test the complete data pipeline with end users.

Working closely with our founders, inventors, advisors, and partners, you'll contribute directly to the next iteration of our wearable solutions. Your direct supervisor at Touchwaves has a PhD in materials science and extensive experience in clothing-integrated wearables.

Who We Are Looking For

We’re looking for a motivated BSc or MSc student in one of the following areas:

  • Biomedical Engineering

  • Industrial Design (technical focus)

  • Materials Engineering / Textile Design

  • Electrical Engineering

  • Data Science / Computer Science

You are:

  • Curious about human performance and bio-sensing.

  • Excited about prototyping and testing in lab and field conditions.

  • Skilled at formulating hypotheses, analyzing data, and presenting findings clearly.

  • Comfortable working in a start-up environment (hands-on, creative, resourceful).

  • Able to work independently, but also thrive in a small, ambitious team.

Requirements
  • Enrolled as a BSc/MSc student at a university (internship/thesis possible).

  • Basic knowledge of physiological signals (HR, SpO₂, HRV) and/or wearable sensors.

  • Experience with prototyping tools (electronics, textiles, Arduino/Raspberry Pi, or similar).

  • Specifically for data-oriented students: Familiarity with Python, MATLAB, or R for signal analysis.

  • Strong analytical mindset and willingness to experiment.

  • Fluent in English (Dutch is a plus, not required).

What We Offer
  • A unique chance to become part of the Touchwaves team.

  • Direct exposure to real-world projects with defense, elite sports, and healthcare partners.

  • Opportunity to co-create prototypes and see them tested in field and lab environments.

  • Mentorship from founders and advisors with deep expertise in physiology, wearables, and data science.

  • Office location in Eindhoven, with access to labs, prototyping facilities, and collaborative networks.

  • A dynamic start-up culture: ownership, creativity, and impact from day one.

  • Internship compensation aligned with your university’s guidelines (€550,- per month for a full-time internship).
